Skin resurfacing offers significant cosmetic improvement in the way skin looks and feels. It’s particularly effective at addressing:
- Fine lines and wrinkles.
- Skin that has a dull or aged appearance.
- Scars from injury or acne.
The procedures I offer stimulate the deep layers of tissue, encouraging collagen production. This helps patients create new, healthier, more even, and more radiant skin.
What to Expect with Skin Resurfacing
Patients are invited to visit my practice in the Fairfax and Northern Virginia area for an initial consultation. During our discussion, we talk about what they want to accomplish, and I conduct an examination of their areas of concern. We also discuss my skin resurfacing procedures. My favorite and most frequently used combines two different techniques: micro-needling and peeling.
I use a minimally invasive treatment that creates hundreds of perforations in the skin with a handheld medical device. These perforations are nearly invisible to the human eye, and they encourage collagen production at deep layers of the skin. Micro-needling is particularly effective with scars since it causes the deep layers of the dermis to grow and repair themselves.
A skin peel treatment stimulates collagen growth in the deep levels of tissue. It can also cause the outer layers to peel off, leaving behind new, glowing skin. I apply the peel before and after micro-needling to give patients a refreshed, youthful-looking appearance. In combination, the procedures work especially well because the perforations caused by the micro-needling deliver the acids from the peel deeper into the dermis – the skin layer where they are most effective. As a result, patients get the stimulation of the dermis from a deep peel without having to use stronger acids to penetrate the skin’s outer layers.
The Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Most of my Fairfax and Northern Virginia patients say that treatment is not particularly painful and is an excellent tradeoff given the benefit it offers and the short recovery time. During the procedure, which takes place at my practice, I:
- Use numbing cream on the skin. This takes effect in about a half-hour.
- Alternatively apply peel treatments and micro-needling. This takes about 20 minutes.
Recovering from Skin Resurfacing
After the procedure, patients can expect redness for about a day and mild swelling for about one week. These are similar to the effects of sunburn, and after the first 24 hours, it’s very hard to tell that a person had treatment.
Fairfax and Northern Virginia patients can usually put on make-up after the irritation has gone down, (24 hours) but I recommend staying out of the sun to aid in healing. (I recommend sun avoidance for skin health anyway!) Combining micro-needling with a skin peel actually reduces the amount of peeling most of my patients experience; however, some flaking may take place over the next three or four days.
By the end of one week, skin resurfacing patients typically see a major improvement in the luster, youthfulness, smoothness, and tone of their skin. Combining treatment with an ongoing skin rejuvenation regimen can provide even more effective and lasting results.
