Breast Augmentation in Northern Virginia
Breast augmentation is a procedure that enhances the volume and shape of your breasts using implants. Choosing the right implants from the many different shapes, sizes, and materials can be daunting. Northern Virginia plastic surgeon Dr. M. Renee Jespersen understands that you need to understand all your choices to develop a look that you love.
Being a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Jespersen has an intimate understanding of shape and the delicate balance between breast size and other parts of your body. This allows Dr. Jespersen to help patients discover their optimal figure. During the consultation, you will have a one-on-one discussion with the doctor to determine what you want your breasts to look like and how these enhancements will look on your body.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Many women think that they are alone in their feelings about the size and shape of their breasts. But breast augmentation is not simply about enlarging or restoring the size of your breasts, it is about raising self-esteem and promoting positive body image.
Here are some reasons that patients consider breast augmentation:
- Micromastia: breasts never fully develop during puberty.
- Asymmetry: one breast is significantly larger (usually half a cup or more) than the other.
- Childbirth: some women experience loss of breast tissue and shape after giving birth to their children.
- Aging: loose, sagging skin commonly affects women’s breasts as they grow older.
Even though patients may have one or more of the above problems, breast augmentation isn’t the answer for everyone. In order to have a successful result, patients need to have a thorough understanding of what the procedure can do and have a healthy set of expectations regarding the outcome. Skipping this part of the process can result in disappointment.
Breasts and Your Body Contour
All bodies are beautiful. But many women want to enhance their curves to emphasize their femininity or simply reshape natural contours lost over time. Changing the size and shape of your breasts is a big step in creating (or restoring) your figure. Frequently other physical issues can be addressed at the same time to maximize the effect you are looking for.
To achieve natural-looking results that work with your body, during your consultation Dr. Jespersen will:
- Discuss the breast size, shape, and feel that best matches your desired results.
- Use 3D imaging to show you how different breast sizes and shapes will look on your body.
- Advise you on the aesthetic possibilities to achieve a natural look.
- Answer any questions that you have regarding the procedure.
Each type of implant feels and looks different, so patients need to consider how they want their breasts to feel as well as the look they want to achieve.
Breast Augmentation Surgery
On the day of surgery you will receive general anesthesia. The amount of time needed for augmentation varies based on the surgical technique and implant used. Most cases require between one and two hours in the operating room. Dr. Jespersen will help you decide on the procedure that the least scarring possible while getting the result that you want.
After surgery you will be escorted to the recovery room for observation. It is normal for patients to experience the following symptoms following surgery:
- Chest tightness, stiffness and heaviness.
- Nipples lacking sensitivity or having increased sensitivity.
- Swelling that makes skin temporarily shiny or itchy.
Patients are normally able to return home after just a few hours spent in the recovery room but require an additional few weeks to fully heal.
Though breast augmentation surgery does take time to heal, you will be able to return to normal activity relatively soon. The majority of patients resume their normal routine four days or less after surgery. The biggest restriction is no heavy lifting for several weeks after the implants are placed. This keeps them from shifting out of position.
